The natural light of stars

Barbara DePonti asked me to make sounds for her project “La luce naturale delle stelle”. For this project she made constellations of LEDs on the roof of the planetarium in Milan (Italy). Because of (light)pollution it`s hard to see stars in Milan. For that reason she wanted to show the people the constellations as they would be seen if there was no pollution.  The planetarium is located in a big public park in Milan. So anybody who gows there when it`s dark, can see the stars. And anybody who gows there by daytime can hear the stars (and see one, when it`s not clowded ;) )

Explanation about the sound:

All celestial bodies vibrate. It depends on the observer how to interpretate this vibrations. The choice of interpretation turns the observer into a creator. If we use audible devices to interpretate the vibrations of the stars we would hear noise. For that reason I used a lot of  (filtered) noise in my composition.
The tempo is 90 Bpm, a human in rest. The composition  is 365 bars long and 1 count. Also to point out that space always is an human interpretation.
The human race also transmit vibrations into the universe. Just think of our sattelites we use for communication. I used a female voice (courtesy of Valentina Paroni) reciting Dante’s Devine Comedy and scrambled it. I used Dante because for me it relates to the ending of darkness and the return of light and so it reminds me of spring.  The constellations that are used in the installation, are  the constellations you see in spring.

The pulsating sounds in  the composition are pitched sinusses. They are pitched in Mi. Mi is short for Milano and is 528 Hz. It was discovered by gregorian monks and biochemists use this frequency to repair broken DNA. Some people believe it is the lovefrequency. I choose this frequency because I hope if the human race would send a message into space it would be a message of love.

A nice collaboration with Barbara DePonti, besides a great artist a great projectmanager.  http://www.barbaradeponti.it

I want to thank the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Proud sponsor of this installation. I want to thank the dutch consul in Milano in special.
